5 Ways to Let God Fight Anxiety for Us

Anxiety is a common struggle. Even though we know that God doesn’t want us to worry, it can be challenging to fight worrisome thoughts. Worries enter our minds often as we deal with stress day by day. It’s easy to let those thoughts take root in our minds, leading us to feel anxious. We have to intentionally fight anxiety to get rid of it. Thankfully, we don’t have to combat anxiety in our limited strength. We can access God’s unlimited strength in the fight against anxiety.

In Matthew 6:33-34, Jesus promises that we won’t need to worry when we make our relationships with God our top priority: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” The more we trust God to help us fight anxiety, the more we can break free of worry. We can also experience true peace – the peace that only God can give us, which Jesus mentions in John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Here are five ways to let God fight anxiety for us.

  • 1. Lean on God’s strength.

    1. Lean on God’s strength.

Acknowledge your need for God’s help. Recognize that you can't overcome anxiety on your own. Humbly admit your limitations and surrender your worries to God. Rely on God's strength to carry you through difficult times. In Isaiah 41:10, God tells you: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Psalm 28:7 celebrates God’s strength: “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me…”. When we rely on God’s power, we find the strength to face any situation that triggers anxiety. Here's how to do so:

    • Move your focus beyond your circumstances to God, by looking for the wonder of what God is doing in your life. The more you intentionally seek God and notice the wonder of his work, the less your worries will consume your attention.
    • As you face anxious thoughts, remind yourself of God's sovereignty. Recognize that you can't control everything, but you can trust in God’s ability to carry you through.
    • Find Bible verses that address anxiety and God's peace. Memorize and meditate on these verses, allowing them to shape your thoughts. When anxious thoughts arise in your mind, consciously replace them with God's promises and truths. Reframe your perspective according to what you've learned from God’s Word.
    • Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and emotions, helping you discern between truth and anxious distortions.

    2. Turn your worries into prayers.

Prayer is a direct line of communication with God. As soon as you notice a worrisome thought, pray about it. Don’t dwell on worries, and let them grow in your mind. Instead, clear them out as soon as you can through prayer. Develop a habit of praying quickly about anything and everything that makes you feel anxious. Philippians 4:6-7 advises: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Give your worries to God, releasing their burden from your shoulders and placing them in his capable hands. 1 Peter 5:7 urges: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Turning worries into prayers is a powerful way to exchange anxiety for peace and trust in God’s provision. Here's how to do so:

    • Pour out your worries to God in heartfelt prayers. Be authentic with God. Share your feelings openly and honestly. God knows your heart, and there's no need to hold back. Pray specifically about each concern and ask God to send you his guidance and peace of mind
    • Take each worry and transform it into a prayer request. Instead of dwelling on the problem, present it to God as a request for his intervention, guidance, and peace. Incorporate the request for God's will to be done in each situation.
    • As you pray, express your faith and trust in God's ability to handle your worries. Believe that God is attentive to your prayers and desires what's best for you. Shift your focus from the worries themselves to God’s character. Ponder God’s faithfulness, love, and wisdom as you bring your concerns before him.
    • After you've turned your worries into prayers, release them to God's care. Trust that he hears you and is working on your behalf, even if the outcome is not immediately evident. Remember that God's timing is not always aligned with yours. Be patient as you wait for his response, and trust that he is actively working behind the scenes. Stay attentive to any guidance from God about actions you should take in each situation.
    • Make turning worries into prayers a consistent practice. When new worries arise, apply the same process of turning them into conversations with God.

  • 3. Invite the Holy Spirit to renew your mind as you meditate on God’s Word.

    3. Invite the Holy Spirit to renew your mind as you meditate on God’s Word.

The Bible is filled with promises that provide comfort and strength in times of anxiety. Psalm 119:105 points out: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” The Holy Spirit can help you replace anxious thoughts with positive, uplifting truths from God's Word. Romans 12:2 urges: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Renewing your mind is a transformative process that involves aligning your perspective with God's truth. The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in this process, guiding and empowering you to let go of negative thought patterns and embrace God's perspective. Scripture meditation anchors you in God’s promises, reminding you of his faithfulness. When you engage with God's Word, the Holy Spirit helps you internalize its truths and apply them to your life. Here’s how to do so:

    • Choose a passage of Scripture that encourages you in the current circumstances making you feel anxious. It could be a passage about God’s love or faithfulness.
    • Read the passage slowly and attentively. Consider the words, phrases, and implications. Reflect on how these truths apply to your situation.
    • Repeat the passage, allowing its words to sink in. This repetition helps embed God’s promises in your heart and mind, making it easier to recall and rely on them during times of anxiety.
    • Consider how the truths from the passage can guide your thoughts and actions. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you internalize those truths so they shape your perspective and response to anxious thoughts.

    4. Practice mindfulness in God’s presence.

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment. As Christians, we can take mindfulness a step further by grounding ourselves in God’s presence during these moments. When we focus our attention on God’s love and power, we find a refuge from anxiety. In Psalm 46:10, God says: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Here’s how to do so:

    • Begin with deep, intentional breaths. As you inhale, imagine breathing in God's peace and love. As you exhale, release any anxiety or tension.
    • Turn your thoughts to God's presence with each breath. Visualize God with you, surrounding you with his love and protection. Be present in the moment, focusing on God's presence and power, rather than dwelling on fears of the future.
    • As you focus on God's presence, express gratitude for his love and care. Share your anxieties in prayer, knowing that he is listening to you with a willingness to help you.
    • Incorporate a relevant Bible verse that speaks about God’s presence, such as Psalm 16:11 (“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”) or Jeremiah 29:13 (“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”). Repeat the verse you choose to center your thoughts on God’s truth.

    5. Remember God’s gift of a guardian angel to you.

The guardian angel that God has assigned to accompany you through life is a reminder that God cares deeply for you and is committed to helping you with everything you need. God empowers your guardian angel to help you at all times – including when you feel anxious. Psalm 91:11 declares that God “… will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” In the middle of any situation that triggers anxiety, you have the incredible gift of an angel – one of God’s messengers – to guard you. Jesus refers to guardian angels in Matthew 18:10 when he talks about God’s care for children: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” So, embrace the gift of your guardian angel with gratitude, as a reminder of God's unfailing love and watchful care for you. Welcome God’s work in your life through your guardian angel and let that strengthen your faith and help you break free from anxiety. Here’s how to do so:

    • When you pray to God, ask him to send you help from your guardian angel in every situation where you feel anxious. Ask God to work through that angel to send you protection and support as you navigate the challenges of life.
    • Express gratitude for the presence of a guardian angel in your life. Recognize how God empowers your angel to protect you from unseen dangers. Trust that God’s power working in every detail of your life is much greater than any anxiety you’ll ever face.

Anxiety may be a part of life in this stressful world, but as Christians, we have a source of unwavering strength and peace in our wonderful Heavenly Father. We don’t need to let worry consume us. We only need to reach out for God for help in anxious situations. By following these ways to let God fight anxiety for us, we can find solace in God’s promises and experience the transformative power of his presence in our lives. So, let’s trust God with the confidence that he is faithful to guide us through every challenge we face.
