8 Ways to Pray for Your Children While They’re at School

As a former homeschooling mother, I was very worried about sending my children to school. How could I help them on a day to day basis with them not in my home? At first, I didn’t know how to help my children when they were away from me. But this past year, I’ve learned the value and power of prayer.

Praying for our children as they go to school each day not only connects them to me, but also, I know that God uses my prayers to accomplish good things in their lives. These are some of the prayers I’ve prayed for my children each day. Use these prayers as a way to start. Tailor them to fit your child and each unique situation. I might not pray all of these every day, but at least a few of these quick prayers will help us stay connected and speak into our children’s lives - even as they are at school.

  • 1. Make Good Choices

    1. Make Good Choices

Lord God, help my child make good choices today. I know that they will be asked to do or say things that might contradict what I have taught them. Help them to stand up and do the right thing. Help them to know which is the right choice and which is the wrong choice. Sometimes, that is even hard for me, but help them as they navigate their own path at school today. I know that making a good choice might be hard, and they might have to suffer because they made the right choice. Help it to build character in their life. O God, help them also to know that even if they make a wrong choice they are still loved and accepted by You. Help them know that they can’t lose my love because of a wrong choice either. God, protect them from suffering but help them stand up and do the right thing today. Amen.

    2. Provide Good Friendships

Dear God, help my child to make good friends. Help them to know and be wise as they choose their friendships. Help them to seek out the friends who will encourage and build them up. Keep them from those friendships that will harm them and keep them from You. Give them good, Christian friends at school. Help them see that their friendships are important and it matters who they choose to hang around. Help guide them and also help them to be good friends. Give my child a heart to love those our him/her and help them to be a good friend as well. Protect them from harmful friendships and make good friendships easy to find. Help them to grow and develop and learn what it is like to have good friends while they are at school. I know that You will ultimately be their friend, so when they feel all alone, help remind them that You are on their side and You care for them. Help them to see You as the closest friend who will never leave them. Amen.

    3. Protect Them

God, I know that you care and love my child as much as I do. Help protect them. Keep them safe as they travel to school. Keep a hedge of protection around their bodies. I know that you will not allow anything to enter their lives that wouldn’t be for their good, but I do ask that you keep them physically safe. I pray for physical protection as they go through their day today. Also, please provide spiritual protection. We serve an enemy that seeks to destroy their souls and hearts. Help keep that enemy at bay and keep a hedge of protection around their spiritual life. Lord, I pray that protection follows them through their classes, as they go out for recess or break, and also as they come home. Even though I can’t physically be with them as they go to school, I know You go with them. Please keep them safe. Amen.

    4. Remember What They’ve Studied

Lord, I know that my child has tests and quizzes today. Help them to remember what they’ve studied. Help them re recall of the facts and details they have learned. Bring to mind the answers as they take the tests. Help to give them confidence as they take the test. I know that they are anxious about tests and worried, but help calm them during the test. Give them peace and knowledge to be able to pass this test. I know the hard work they've put into this test, so let the grade reflect all of the effort. Hep them do well on their school work today. Help them to do well on their school work. Give them a clear mind and a clear heart as they learn and study. Make the connections between all that they are learning. Help them understand difficult things and give clarity to the confusion. I pray for their hearts to absorb the knowledge they need to learn today. Amen.

    5. Adults Who Will Speak Life

O God, I pray for the adults that will speak into my child’s life today. I pray for them as they teach, guide, coach, and lead my child today. I pray for the administrators, that they will have the wisdom to help deal with difficult situations. I pray for the counselors to give help to those in need. I pray for the teachers to have patience, love, and care for their students. I pray for the coaches to be kind but also help them to encourage my child to do his/her best. I pray for the adults that will have contact with my child today. Keep my child safe from those harmful adults. Help my child and adults to get along today. I pray that the adults speak encouragement and life into my child. I pray that the things I would say, help those adults say those things. Help my child listen and learn from these teachers, coaches, and other adults. Help my child be receptive to both the correction and encouragement these adults provide. Amen.

    6. Have Fun and Laugh

O Lord, I pray that my child laughs and has fun today! School can be stressful with heartache and friendships and hard work, but help them to also have fun. Provide opportunities for them to laugh today. Give them funny friends and fun adults who don’t take life so seriously. Help put a smile on my child’s face with a fun joke or play. I pray that my child can relax and not be so serious at school all of the time. I pray that he/she has fun! Give them a chance to be a kid and just enjoy their day. Let the pressure of this world, academics, or relationships not be the domineering factor in their life today. Help today to be fun! I pray that their laughter will fill their day. Give them games, jokes, and fun times with friends. Help the teachers to do something fun today. Give them good memories for today. Amen.

    7. Give Them Courage

Heavenly Father, help my child have courage today. Courage to either stand up for what is right. Or courage to stay silent. Help them to have the courage to not be afraid to try new things or make new friends. Help them not to fear. I know that they might struggle with having fear, but grant courage in their hearts. Help them remember that you walk with them. Help them to remember that I love them. Give them a heart that isn’t afraid. Help them to trust you when difficult situations arise and to be brave and stand up and do the right thing. Help them try new things as well. Help give them confidence and courage to maybe step out of their comfort zone and try something new. I pray that when they feel nervous or afraid, they immediately show up with a Bible verse or a friend to help them through that time. I pray for them to just develop, over time, a heart that is courageous. Amen.

    8. Calm Their Worried Heart

Today, my child is anxious, O God. Free them from worry. Help my child have peace in their hearts. You see their worried looks and even see their hearts that are filled with anxiety. Help calm them today. Give them your peace. Help remind my child of your presence in their life. You will never leave them, and you care for them. Show them how to move forward one step at a time and give them people around them to help them as well. I can’t be with my child, but You are with them. I pray that you will calm their heart. Let your peace flood their bodies, minds, and spirits. I pray that you will help to provide them with a worry-free day. I know that sometimes that is hard, but even if they do feel worried, help give them a truth from Your word, the Bible, to get them through that moment. Amen.
