9 Worship Songs and Hymns to Help Us Ring in Spring

9 Worship Songs and Hymns to Help Us Ring in Spring

Spring is one of my favorite seasons. Spring is about the return of color in New England and beyond. The trees are brown all winter because the beautiful fall foliage has long since fallen to the ground. Except for the snow, which makes everything picturesque again, during winter you see a lot of brown trees. However, spring brings the budding of new leaves and the pleasant sound of chirping birds. These sounds and colors of spring reflect the promise of new life. Hearing and seeing this tells you the dark, bitter days of winter will soon be gone and replaced with the bright, colorful, and hopeful days of spring.

Spring is also the time of year we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, which is the greatest hope of life we all have. There is no better way to celebrate hope and life than with singing. To encourage you, I put together a list of worship songs and hymns that would match the optimism and hope that come with the arrival of spring. As you think about the songs I share (and hopefully sing), I pray they will remind you of God’s love, plan, and eternal hope in Jesus Christ. These are among my favorites, and I hope they may also become some of your favorites.

1. Great Is Thy Faithfulness

people reading hymns from books to represent hymn "great is thy faithfulness"

I don’t know if there is a hymn that encapsulates God’s faithfulness through the changing seasons of life more than this one does. Any song that speaks to God’s faithfulness will always move my heart. It does so not because I have always been faithful but because God has. Despite shortcomings, highs, and lows, he remains faithful; this hymn reminds you of that. The verses speak of a God who does not change and whose compassion will never fail. It then tells of nature that acknowledges God’s faithfulness, and then the last verse tells of pardon for sin, peace that endures, and the blessing of God’s presence and strength. These belong to us not just for today but forever.

Great is Thy Faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning, new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me

2. Revive Us Again

2. Revive Us Again

If spring brings things back to life, this hymn captures that. The words are simple, but the song rings as a prayer from our heart to God’s heart. This hymn recognizes the triune God. The lyrics praise the Father for pursuing us to redeem us, Jesus for bearing our sins, and the Holy Spirit for revealing who Jesus is. When you put those things together, it culminates in a rising crescendo of a chorus declaring these heartfelt words.

Revive Us Again
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Revive us again.

3. How Great Thou Art

Woman in nature; how do we see God in nature?

Some hymns speak to God’s majestic nature and create perspective as to who you are and who he is. In this hymn, we see God as the creator and the one who did not spare his Son but gave him as a sacrifice for us. Ultimately, this song is one of victory. Jesus will return one day, and we will be with him forever. Thinking of that causes joy, hope, and expectation within my soul. I hope it does the same for you. The other thing this song does is it humbles me. When you consider who God is and who we are, there is no good reason for God to love us and even want to be with us, yet he does. What an amazing God. If you know the chorus to this song, now would be an excellent time to open your mouth and sing the great words of this song.

How Great Thou Art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

4. Who Am I by Casting Crowns

A man kneeling by the ocean with arms raised in worship

I went back into the archives for this one because the message in this song is so amazing to ponder. Mark Hall wrote it, and it forces you to consider one of life's significant contrasts. The idea of an all-powerful, omnipresent, infinite, and holy God choosing to love and care for finite, sinful people like us. It reminds us that we don’t hold our positions in Christ because of anything we have done or deserve. We are in Christ only because of what Jesus has done for us. Because of what he did, we will forever belong to him. That is our identity and our future. This song reminds you of who you are in Christ, not to puff you up but to lift you up. We, the undeserving, are now made right because of Jesus.

Who Am I
I am a flower quickly fading.
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still you hear me when I'm calling
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling
And you've told me who I am
I am yours

5. Worthy Is The Lamb (Fred Hammond Version)

5. Worthy Is The Lamb (Fred Hammond Version)

Again, reaching into the archives, I found this song, originally written by Darlene Zschech. Since its composition, it has been sung in churches around the globe, and many recording artists have covered it. Fred Hammond did one of my favorite covers. This is a song of thanksgiving and adoration. It begins with a thank you for all Jesus has done and ends with a declaration of worship to the Lamb of God, the one who bled and died for you and me.

Just remember what you were before Jesus found you. Couple that with his sacrifice for your salvation, and the words worthy come to mind. It is hard to reflect on who Jesus is and what he has done and not worship him. One day, we will all bow before the lamb and worship him before the throne. You don’t have to wait until then. You can start now. This song will help you do that.

Worthy Is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb
Seated on the throne
Crown You now with many crowns
You reign victorious

High and lifted up
Jesus Son of God
The Darling of Heaven crucified
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb

6. Made For More by Josh Baldwin

6. Made For More by Josh Baldwin

You may sit and think about life, wondering why God saved you. Especially when you think of the promise of Ephesians 2:10, which states you are God’s handiwork, made new in Christ, for works God has planned for you. Sometimes, you think about that promise and compare it to where you are now and wonder if there is more. More doesn’t mean more money or more stuff, but more purpose and influence in the lives of those around you. It is appropriate to be reminded that God has saved you for more. You are here on purpose, and this song is an encouragement to remind you of this truth.

Made for More
'Cause I wasn't made to be tending a grave
I was called by my name
Born and raised back to life again
I was made for more
So why would I make a bed in my shame?
When a fountain of grace is running my way
I know I am Yours
And I was made for more

7. Tell Me Again (Lest I Forget) by Alvin Slaughter

Woman standing behind the evening sky

This is one of the lesser-known songs by Alvin Slaughter, but it carries a timeless message. He recorded it on his 2008 album Overcomer. This song tells about God’s faithfulness and how we respond to him through the seasons of life. In seasons of obedience and disobedience, God takes it all and uses it for his glory. If you trust God and are unsure what is happening or if you have messed it all up and are wondering the same thing. Remember that God fits it all into his plan, and sometimes you need someone to tell you that again lest you forget.

Tell Me Again
Tell me again
Lest I forget who I am
I need to remember this story
Tell me again
Of how we fit into his plan
How he makes our failure his glory
Remind me lest I forget

8. Don’t Stop Praying by Matthew West

Man praying

With confidence, there is something in your life you are praying for. If not, then there is something in someone else’s life you can pray for. However, what happens when you pray and don’t see answers immediately? Some may wonder if God is listening and if he cares. In those seasons, you may feel like giving up. All I can say is don’t. This song by Matthew West encourages you not to do that, and in this quote, he tells you why he wrote the song.

“We’ve all been to a place where discouragement can make us wonder if God really hears our prayers. I wrote this song for anybody who’s ever felt like giving up or losing their faith,” - Matthew West

We serve a God who hears and answers our prayers. Granted, his timetable may not match ours, but his love and concern for our situation are unparalleled. In this season, whatever you are praying, trusting, and believing God for, don’t stop. You may be on your breakthrough's doorstep, so believe in God.

Don't Stop Praying
Don't stop praying
Don't stop calling on Jesus' name.
Keep on pounding on Heaven's door.
And let your knees wear out the floor
Don't stop believing
'Cause mountains move with just a little faith
And your Father's heard every single word you're saying
So, don't stop praying
