'Boy Meets World' Actress Danielle Fishel on Her Cancer Fight and How She's Helping Others
  • Updated Jan 02, 2025

If you grew up and watched television in the 1990s, you are likely more than familiar with “Boy Meets World.” It was a beloved sitcom about Cory Matthews, his family and his two best friends, Shawn and Topanga. It ran for seven seasons on ABC, providing everyone who tuned in with plenty of laughs. It was must-see television in the 90s.

In August 2024, Danielle, who played the odd but lovable Topanga on the show, revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, the actress revealed in an interview that her cancer was caught early. When her doctor found the cancer, Ductal Carcinoma in Situ, it was at Stage 0.

She says that right from the outset, her doctor was upbeat but also reminded her that there is no such thing as an easy or preferred type of cancer.

“My doctor told me, ‘You’re going to be okay. I just want you to know I’m so thankful that it’s Stage 0, but I do want you to know that there is no easy cancer,’” Danielle said.

She recalled the moment that she informed her husband, who lost both of his parents to cancer, about her diagnosis. After breaking the news to him, she said she “truly just saw the blood drain from his face.”

The clip posted on YouTube reveals that after undergoing two surgeries, Danielle is now cancer-free. Now, she is using her cancer diagnosis to tell others to go to their doctor and get their checkups. Danielle also added that after having gone through this, there are two areas in her life where she will now start being a little more selfish: her physical health and her mental health.

“As I’ve gotten older and I’ve become a mom and a wife, and I started thinking, ‘Is being selfless actually the virtue we think it is, or is it really harming us?’” she said. “And I think it’s really harming us, this idea of putting everybody before yourself. And when it comes to my health, when it comes to my mental health, those are just two areas that I’m not willing to sacrifice for anyone.”
