A young woman’s simple act of kindness and love toward a little boy in a wheelchair resulted in a friendship and changed that child’s life and outlook.
Life can deal with some crushing blows and devastating circumstances. It’s not always a fair experience. In fact, life seemingly gives some people more than their fair share of hardships and trials. But our attitude during and following those trying situations can have a massive impact on others.
In a clip posted on YouTube, a woman, Hannah Hutzley, who suffered a catastrophic injury that landed her in a wheelchair, forged a relationship with a child also in a wheelchair. They were able to bond and connect over wheelies in a hardware store.
“Just this little faint whisper of a ‘Hi,’” Hannah said. “So, I look over, and there’s just this sweet little kid, with these little curious eyes, and I was, like, ‘Oh, hi.’ And this is the first time I’ve ever seen a kid in a wheelchair in person. He, like, whispers again to me, ‘Do you know how to do wheelies?’”
Hannah answered the young man, mentioning she knew how to do them. She then began popping wheelies in the middle of the hardware store, much to the sweet young man’s delight.
After the wheelies in the hardware store, Hannah and the young man have gotten ice cream several times. They even have wheelchair races and play “choo-choo train.”
The young man’s dad mentioned that Hannah and her kindness have had a massive impact on the young man. He wants to help around the house and wants to go out and experience life, refusing to let his wheelchair stop him. His father said that his son wants to be just like Hannah.
Later in the interview, Hannah mentioned how the young man had impacted her and changed her perspective on life.
“It’s, like, you have this really awful terrible thing happen to you, but then you see it in the eyes of a kid. And they, they don’t see it that way. They see it as, ‘Oh, cool. You have a wheelchair, you know, you’re like a car. You’re like this toy.’”
Ephesians 4:32: “And be kind to one another, full of pity, having forgiveness for one another, even as God in Christ had forgiveness for you.”
