MercyMe - I Can Only Imagine
- Updated Mar 14, 2022
"I Can Only Imagine," released in 2001 by the band MercyMe, anticipates the day we stand before Jesus in all his glory. This song is touching both musically and lyrically. It was written in just ten minutes by lead singer Bart Millard after the loss of his father to cancer. His father had been abusive and they had a strained relationship, but they reconciled at the end. The story behind the song was turned into a movie in 2018, starring J. Michael Finley and Dennis Quaid.
Lyrics:
I can only imagine what it will be like
When I walk by Your side, I can only imagine
What my eyes would see, when Your face is before me
I can only imagine, Yeah
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel? Will I dance for You Jesus or in awe of You be still?
Will I stand in Your presence or to my knees, will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine, I can only imagine, I can only imagine
When that day comes, and I find myself standing in the Son
I can only imagine, when all I will do is forever, forever worship You
I can only imagine, yeah, I can only imagine
Surrounded by Your glory, What will my heart feel? Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of You be still?
Will I stand in your presence, or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine, yeah, I can only imagine
Surrounded by Your glory, What will my heart feel? Will I dance for you Jesus, or in awe of You be still?
Will I stand in your presence, or to my knees, will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine, yeah
I can only imagine
I can only imagine, yeah-yeah
I can only imagine (x4)
When all I will do, is forever, forever worship You
I can only imagine
